Production of biodiesel based on cardoon

The use of biomass for energy applications ; vegetable crops, waste or other subproducts of organic origin  is becoming highly important in Europe. Amongst these applications are the combustion of waste (sawdust, stalks, roots, etc.), fermentation for the production of bioethanol, and the production of biodiesel from oil from seeds.

In this context, at the end of 2005, the European BIOCARD project was launched, a research project within the VI Framework Programme and principally aimed at establishing cardoon (Cynara cardunculus L.) as an alternative energy crop and demonstrating the viability both technically and economically  of the overall process of exploiting this crop for energy applications.

Process with less production costs

To this end, the aim of the BIOCARD research project ; involving 12 European organisations with GAIKER-IK4 amongst them was to close the crop-energy chain. The most important aspects thereof can be summed up in the following working areas involving the cultivation of the crop: the evaluation of its biomass, the evaluation of the oil extracted from the seeds to make biodiesel and the technical-economic viability study.

Also, GAIKER-IK4 is leading a task in order to develop and optimise a new process based on a heterogenous catalysis that would provide cost reduction in the production of biodiesel, the simplification of the process and the minimisation of waste dumping associated with the process, thus enhancing the quality of the resulting products and subproducts (glycerine).

ONT Biopaliwa, supplier of wide range of equipment for the emerging biofuel industry now offers a high-quality oil press which can be integrated with a stoker unit (pellets' burner).

The specifications of the press are the following:

<typolist>

RAW MATERIAL: JATROPHA SEEDS, RAPE SEED, LINSEED, HEMP, MUSTARD, SESAME. NO IMPURITIES LARGER THAN Ø 4 X 10 MM. NO METALLIC IMPURITIES, WATER CONTENT LESS THAN 10 % CAPACITY: 40KG/HOUR YIELD: ADJUSTABLE, 21-27 % (depending on seed moisture and –condition) Oil temperature: 65 °CPRODUCTS: Coldpressed vegetable oil, impurities approx. 5 %. Pellets, 6-6,5 mmSEDIMENTATION TIME: 5 days at 20°C (rapesePOWER SUPPLY: 3 X 400 VAC, 50 Hz ALTERNATIVELY 1 X 230 VAC, 50 HZ (Inverter POWER CONSUMTION: Approx. 100 W/l oil

Delivery includes: Motor protection with manual switch,EU plug, 3x400 V 16 Aseed valve

Can be fitted with:Frequency inverter

If the oil is used for fuelling a car, the concept makes it possible to cover your need for room heating and transportation 100% from a crop that is grown in your local area, can be used as it comes right of the field, and is produced close to the place of use, so costs for transportation are minimal.
